This past January my husband and I welcomed our first child into the world! She is absolutely amazing and we love her soooooo much. It’s hard to imagine our family without her in it! I thought I’d share with you my journey before, during and post pregnancy. This will be a 4 Part series on Baby G’s birth story including:
Hope you all enjoy reading a little bit into our story and our family. Feel free to comment how your pregnancy journey was, I would love to hear about it 🙂
Without further ado, here is Part 1…
Part 1: Finding Out
May 7th, 2016 changed my husband and I’s lives forever… the day before Mother’s Day we found we were going to be parents! We hadn’t been trying to have a baby but we also weren’t preventing it either, so it was more of a pleasant surprise than a shock.
I woke up that morning, knowing I was a few days late from “that time of the month.” I remember feeling a little extra tired and I had a sore back the previous week, but I just assumed it was from starting my new full time job and sitting at a desk every day. I thought to myself, well I guess it wouldn’t hurt to take a pregnancy test. Even though we weren’t preventing a pregnancy, I really wasn’t expecting a positive result. I had taken many pregnancy tests before that (newlywed paranoia :D) and they all had been negative so I wasn’t thinking too much into this one.
At 7:00 AM on that Saturday morning I woke up and had to pee. Nick was still sleeping, and I went ahead and took the test. Instead of checking it every two seconds like I would usually do, I took time to wash my hands, brush my teeth and patiently waited to look. I looked at it and saw the little “+” sign. I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes, and had to double and triple check it to make sure I wasn’t seeing things – after all, it was 7:00 in the morning which was usually before my functioning time. Once I made sure I knew what I was seeing I opened the door to our bedroom and saw Nick looking at me. I think I said, “I’m pregnant,” and then just started smiling and crying! I do remember Nick punching his fist in the air and saying “YES!” We spent the rest of the morning looking at nursery ideas on Pinterest – well, more so me than Nick haha.
The next couple of weeks we made some big changes – I completely cut out caffeine and ate SUPER healthy. I’m usually not too picky about food but for those 2 weeks I was a food Nazi!
It was so hard to not tell anyone for those few weeks, especially since the next day was Mother’s Day! My mom and I are super close so I kind of avoided calling her for a couple of weeks (sorry mom!) so I wouldn’t accidentally spill the beans.
We ended up telling our parents when I was 8 weeks along. My parents lived 2 hours away and were coming in for a random visit one weekend. We decided to wear these shirts we purchased from amazon that said, “This GUY/GIRL is going to be a DADDY/MOMMY.” They pulled in the driveway and when we went outside to greet them they didn’t even notice our shirts! Nick was recording the whole thing and as they came up to hug us they said, “Why are you all being weird?” I replied with, “Look at my shirt,” which was then followed by shock and turned into a huge hug/laugh/cry fest… it was great! We told the rest of my family through skype/phone calls a couple weeks later because most of them are spread out in different states.
For Nick’s family we told his parents on skype because we hadn’t had the chance to get down there and didn’t want to wait any longer! Most of his family lives very close together, and at a Father’s Day get together we wore our “Mommy/Daddy” shirts. Just like with my parents, we were greeted with lots hugs and smiles!
Both our parents were SUPER excited of course. Baby G is the 5th grandchild on my husband’s side and 1st on mine. At 11 weeks we made the big announcement (Facebook official right?) and we were so relieved the news was finally out! I couldn’t wait to begin this journey and was glad I no longer had to hold it in.
I daydreamed of being pregnant often- showing off a cute baby bump, talking to my child, having the perfect nursery, eating super healthy and having that pregnancy “glow” everyone always talked about. Little did I know I was in for a completely different ride!
